ENDOMETRIOSIS
Endometriosis has become an increasingly common health condition worldwide and is being labelled as "the career woman’s disease" because there seems to be a strong correlation between endometriosis and the increased stress levels experienced by so many working women today. Endometrial tissue occurs naturally in the endometrium – a layer of tissue lining the uterus. With endometriosis, however, this tissue "migrates" to other parts of the reproductive system, or outside of the reproductive organs altogether, and can be found in the uterine wall, ovaries, rectovaginal pouches, uterotsacral ligaments, and even in the abdominal cavity.
The main clinical manifestation of endometriosis is lower abdominal pain, dysmenorrhea, irregular periods, painful intercourse, fever during menstruation, dysfunctional vaginal bleeding, nipple discharge, abdominal masses, and infertility.
So how does Chinese medicine treat this problem? In Chinese medicine, diseases and imbalances are diagnosed as patterns. A pattern is defined by the signs and symptoms that a person exhibits, and patients will often present more than one pattern. The most common pattern of Endometriosis seen in TCM is Blood Stagnation, caused by long term Liver Qi Stagnation. The Chinese believe this to be the cause of many Gynaecological problems and in particular it is caused by long-term emotional problems such as frustration, anger, resentment and stress. It is also exacerbated by poor dietary habits.
Chinese medicine believes that Blood travels both in the blood vessels and also in the energy meridians of the body. Ideally, Blood circulates freely through the vessels and meridians, but sometimes it becomes stuck in the meridians causing Congealed Blood or Blood Stasis. When Blood is stuck in the meridians, the main symptom people notice is pain, which is usually described as constant, fixed and stabbing. When Blood is stuck in tissues, it often produces lumps, tumors, or masses, which can also be painful. Endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and ovarian cysts are all examples of Blood Stasis in women.
In addition to Blood Stasis, there are often other disease-causing factors which are part of the patterns of Endometriosis. Cold, Heat, Deficiency, or Excess patterns are frequently part of the mix, and are differentiated based on the clinical manifestations associated with each case of endometriosis. The timing, location, nature, and severity of pain are taken into account, along with associated symptoms.
Western medicine has a lot of trouble in the treatment of Endometriosis, largely due to the fact that treatment is symptomatic. For example surgery may be undertaken to remove scar tissue, but the cause of the scarring is not addressed. With Traditional Chinese Medicine, we treat the cause first, thereby fixing the problem.
