GOUT
Causes & risk factors
Gout is caused by the build up of uric acid. The excessive uric acid in the blood then forms crystals that are deposited in the joints. An elevated blood level of uric acid (called hyperuricemia) occurs when the liver produces more uric acid than the body can excrete in the urine. The high level of urine acid in the blood may be developed by:
- Diet in rich foods (e.g., red meat, cream sauces, red wine etc) producing more uric acid than the kidneys can filter from the blood, or
- Regular consumption of alcohol
- Inbuilt genetic error in uric acid metabolism
Gout usually develops in the joint of the first toe (the big toe) Common symptoms of gout may include the following:
- Intensive Pain
- Inflammation
- Redness
- Stiffness
- Swelling
Gout is a systemic disease (i.e.; condition that occurs throughout the body), if left untreated, gout can damage joints and cause disability.
At 3 Treasure, how do we treat Gout?
At 3 Treasure, we work out a personalised treatment plan for each patient at the initial consultation. Your treatment program is based on our years of experience in treating chronic & difficult syndromes.
The short term goal of treatment is to decrease the amount of uric acid in the joints, which helps to reduce symptoms and prevent further attacks. One or more of the following effective treatments will be used to help you to relieve pain, swelling, stiffness, inflammation, redness and other associated symptoms:
- Chinese Herbal Medicine
- Acupuncture
- Functional Food
- Alkaline Diet
- Life-style Change
- Qigong Breathing Exercises
Once the short term goal is achieved, the long term goal of treatment is to repair damage in the liver and kidney caused by the high level of uric acid and to maintain healthy liver & kidney function to prevent further degeneration in the body.
